Just after Huntington Beach’s Jason Locklin took a handoff and was immediately stuffed for no gain in the Oilers’ Sunset League game Thursday against Los Alamitos, the public address announcer said: “It’s not easy out there tonight, ladies and gentlemen.”

Rarely have such words been more accurate. Los Alamitos, ranked second in Orange County, scored in rapid succession in a 49-6 victory at Huntington Beach.

After Huntington Beach took a 6-0 lead, Los Alamitos (8-1, 3-1) scored on its next five possessions and was ahead, 35-6, at halftime. The outburst enabled several spectators to head home in time to catch “Seinfeld.”

The Griffins, ranked third in the Southern Section Division I poll, took no more than six plays or 2 minutes 12 seconds to score in any first-half drive.

“That’s kind of what we do when we’re playing well,” Los Alamitos Coach John Barnes said. “I was happy we got play a million guys.”

Los Alamitos’ most concise drive resulted in its first touchdown. The two-play series lasted 54 seconds and covered 57 yards.

The touchdown came when quarterback Kevin Feterik flipped a short pass to wide receiver Stan Guyness, who took off around a vacant right side and raced to the end zone to complete a 51-yard play.

Feterik was as sharp as usual in the Griffins’ offense that calls for mostly quick, short to medium passes. He was 14 of 20 for 188 yards and two touchdowns in three quarters. He also ran 14 yards for a touchdown that put Los Alamitos up, 35-6, with 1:18 left in the half.

Feterik has thrown for 20 touchdowns and 2,176 yards with one game left in the regular season.

Tony Hartley of Los Alamitos, the leading receiver in Orange County, had six catches for 82 yards to improve his season totals to 60 catches and 1,023 yards.

After Guyness’ touchdown, running back Tony Austin scored on runs of five, two and 13 yards for Los Alamitos.

Mike Phillips, the Griffin kicker, was seven for seven on extra-point attempts to improve his total to 42 made this season.

The game was not without drama for Huntington Beach. The Oilers scored when running back Locklin took a pitchout and started around the right side but stopped short and completed a 14-yard touchdown pass to tight end Corey Gremel in the back corner of the end zone with 4:55 left in the first quarter.

Locklin, a junior, came into the game needing 45 yards to reach 1,000 for the season but finished with 43 in 20 carries.

He will probably reach 1,000 Thursday when the Oilers (3-6, 0-4) end the season against Fountain Valley at Orange Coast.
