Loving Music Before Fame

In the Oct. 26 interview “On Halloween, Boingo Will Call It a Night--For Good,” Leon Schneiderman of Oingo Boingo said that “it was a nice run as a band. No one died, no one’s strung out on drugs.” Fellow horn player Sam Phipps then joked, “Maybe that’s why we didn’t make it.”

Interesting. It does seem that some celebrities’ careers have skyrocketed after their drug use and high living was publicized (Drew Barrymore and Courtney Love come to mind). These people are portrayed as “cool.”

I’m thankful that bands like Oingo Boingo existed who seemed to love music and not fame and fortune. Maybe Boingo wasn’t big nationally, but I think their legacy will be remembered long after the so-called cool people are forgotten.
