Donnie Davis threw a 10-yard scoring pass to Grant Baynham with 9:20 to go, giving Georgia Tech a 24-23 victory over Wake Forest on Saturday at Winston-Salem, N.C., negating another record-setting day for the Demon Deacons’ Rusty LaRue.

LaRue completed 41 of 65 passes for 501 yards and three touchdowns. Combined with the 55 completions and 478 yards he had against Duke last week, LaRue broke the NCAA two-game mark of 82 completions set by David Klingler of Houston in 1990.

Two missed kicks, as well as a decision not to kick, doomed the Demon Deacons, 1-9 overall and 0-7 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

After LaRue connected with John Lewis on a 63-yard touchdown play in the second quarter, Wake Forest decided to go for a two-point conversion and failed. Bill Hollows missed field-goal attempts of 23 and 47 yards, the latter with 32 seconds left.

LaRue had also taken Wake Forest to the Georgia Tech three-yard line when blitzing strong safety Ryan Stewart forced a fumble that Jermaine Miles recovered for Georgia Tech (5-4, 4-3).

Clemson 17, North Carolina 10--The Tigers (6-3, 5-2) had five interceptions off Mike Thomas, including a 49-yard jaunt by safety Brian Dawkins, to win the ACC contest at Death Valley.

For North Carolina (4-4, 2-3), it was a humiliating experience that seriously threatened any bowl hopes. The Tar Heels came in allowing only 229 yards a game, but gave up 325.

Maryland 30, North Carolina State 13--Jermaine Lewis caught a pass for a touchdown, returned a punt 66 yards and rushed for two scores as the Terrapins (6-3, 4-2) defeated the Wolfpack (2-6, 1-4) in an ACC game at Raleigh, N.C.

Lewis’ two third-quarter scores gave Maryland a 17-10 lead after it had fumbled inside the Wolfpack 10 twice in the first half. Lewis finished with 11 catches for 94 yards and 51 yards rushing.
