A wild gun battle that “sounded like Vietnam” left a 16-year-old boy dead and a man wounded outside a wedding party at the Saddleback Inn late Saturday, police said.

Gustavo Tinajero, who police believe lived in Santa Ana, died at a local hospital of a gunshot wound in the chest, Sgt. Dick Faust of the Santa Ana Police Department said Sunday.

The other victim, Juan Carlos Chavez, 25, whose hometown is unknown, was treated for a bullet wound to the leg and released from a local hospital, Faust said.

“It was quite a gun battle,” he said.

The shootings are being investigated by the department’s gang detail but no suspects are yet in custody.

Witnesses said the staccato blasts of gunfire broke up what was a typical Saturday night at the 60-room inn, now a permanent home to many residents. Weddings are held there almost every week and are usually free of violence, the residents say.

“It sounded like Vietnam,” said Cliff Harris, 50, a former Marine who lives across 1st Street from the inn. “It was a burst of gunfire, at least 9 millimeter [weapons]. They were emptying their magazines, you could tell that.”

The shooting erupted at 10:12 p.m. in the 100 block of Elk Lane, a street named for the Elks Lodge that is directly behind the Saddleback Inn.

Witnesses said several groups of gang members who got into a confrontation at the wedding moved their argument outside and began shooting, Faust said.

A woman who lives at the inn with her daughter said Sunday she looked out her window after the shots and saw a group of men crouched in the trunks of their cars, all holding handguns.

Another witness said Tinajero tried to hide in a camper in the parking lot but was shot when his assailants found him.

Sean Montgomery, 21, who lives at the inn, in the 1600 block of East 1st Street near the Santa Ana Zoo, also said he heard the shots and they “went on and on.”

An employee of the inn who identified himself only as Monti refused to comment other than to say “all the fights and violence took place outside.” He said the manager was not available for comment.

Police found numerous bullet casings in the street and a parking lot behind a laundry facility across nearby Lyon Street, Faust said.

“The motive for the shooting is unknown at this time and the relationship between the two victims and the others is also unknown,” Faust said.

Neither Tinajero nor Chavez were members of the wedding party celebrating inside, Faust said.
