Outfielder Matt Riordan of Westlake High, the Times’ Ventura County player of the year, said Tuesday he will sign a letter of intent today with the University of San Francisco.

The NCAA’s weeklong early signing period begins today.

Riordan, who batted .560 with 20 extra-base hits last season, made recruiting trips to USC, Cal State Northridge and St. Mary’s but wants to play for USF Coach Rich Hill, formerly of Cal Lutheran.

“I like Rich and all the coaches, and I really like the city,” Riordan said. “Coach Hill told me that I can start in right field as a freshman if I earn it.”

Seepolito Imo, Cal State Northridge nose guard, is out for the rest of the season because of a torn medial collateral ligament in his left knee suffered in the fourth quarter of Saturday’s 49-7 loss to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

Imo said Tuesday he will have arthroscopic surgery Friday.

Northridge is ranked No. 196 among 227 NCAA Division I-A and I-AA teams in the latest Sagarin Football Rankings, which are determined by a computer program and based on results and strength of schedule.

The rest of the American West Conference teams are Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (No. 146), Cal State Sacramento (No. 167) and Southern Utah (No. 189).

Former Glendale College quarterback Bob Gagliano signed a contract with the Green Bay Packers this week.

Gagliano, 36, was an All-American at Glendale in 1977. He replaces Ty Detmer, who injured his thumb during the Packers’ loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday.

Santa Clara High quarterback Adrian Maciel is unlikely to play in the Saints’ season finale Saturday against Oak Park.

Maciel, a sophomore who passed for 1,213 yards with nine touchdowns and 12 interceptions, suffered a knee injury last week in a loss to Calabasas.

Santa Clara co-Coach Dan Dolby Jr. said receiver Andy Super will move to quarterback.

Former Kennedy High running back Mike Pringle has been chosen most outstanding player of the Canadian Football League’s Southern Division.

Pringle rushed for 1,791 yards and 13 touchdowns this season for the Baltimore Stallions. It was his second consecutive season as the league’s leading rusher. The selection also makes him one of two finalists for the league most valuable player award, which will be announced Nov. 16.

A parent of a Highland High football player threatened Coach Lin Parker following last week’s 28-13 loss to Littlerock. The school is investigating the incident and said it will beef up security at future home games.

“To my knowledge, no legal action has been taken,” Highland Athletic Director Paul Arnold said. “I don’t know if that is the direction the victim wants to move in or not.”

Parker said he does not plan to take action against the parent but is concerned for the safety of himself and others in the program.

“From my standpoint, I don’t want anything to happen up [at Burroughs Ridgecrest this week],” Parker said. “As of now, I’m not pursuing any action. I’m concerned and I don’t want it to happen again.”
