TENNIS / WOMEN’S ITA REGIONALS : UCLA’s Phebus Advances in Singles, Doubles

IRVINE — UCLA’s Keri Phebus advanced to today’s third round of the Rolex-ITA Southern California Women’s tennis regionals, after defeating San Diego State’s Emma Doyle, 6-1, 6-1, Thursday in the second round at UC Irvine.
Earlier in the day, Phebus, the nation’s top-ranked player and last season’s NCAA champion, beat Arizona State’s Torey Pratt, 6-2, 6-0. Phebus, a graduate of Corona del Mar High, playing with Kelly Rudolph in doubles, advanced to the second round with a victory over USC’s Amber Basica and Pam Trump, 6-2, 7-5. Phebus and Rudolph are seeded third and ranked 16th in the nation.
Also advancing was UCLA’s Brandi Freudenberg. The freshman from El Modena High defeated UCI’s Nina Basica, 6-0, 6-2, in the first round and Pepperdine’s Anna Svendenhov, 6-4, 7-5, in the second.
Third-round and quarterfinal matches will be played beginning at 9 a.m. today. The semifinals will be Saturday, with the finals at 10 a.m. Sunday.
