Every time San Diego State has something at stake, Wyoming is there to ruin it.

Cory Wedel’s 33-yard field goal with 29 seconds left gave Wyoming a 34-31 upset over No. 25 San Diego State on Saturday night at San Diego, ending the Aztecs’ six-game winning streak.

The loss, the fourth in a row to Wyoming, almost certainly ruins San Diego State’s Western Athletic Conference title hopes, dropping it to 7-3 overall and 4-2 in the conference. San Diego State had been tied for first with Brigham Young, which defeated New Mexico and is alone in the lead at 5-1.

And the Cowboys (4-5, 2-4) spoiled San Diego State’s first appearance in the national rankings since 1992.

Wyoming victories in 1992 and 1993 helped keep San Diego State out of bowl contention, and the victory in 1993 got coach Al Luginbill fired and ended Marshall Faulk’s college career on a sour note.

The Cowboys, who had lost three in a row, moved 64 yards in 14 plays for the winning kick, forcing San Diego State to use all three timeouts. The Aztecs got to the Wyoming 34 with six seconds left, but Peter Holt’s 52-yard attempt was wide right.

Wyoming survived four turnovers by gaining 547 yards in total offense, including a season-high 372 rushing. Len Sexton (151 yards), Jermaine McDowell (122) and Marques Brigham (117) all rushed for career highs.

Brigham Young 31, New Mexico 14--Steve Sarkisian threw two touchdown passes and defensive back James Dye’s fourth-quarter fumble recovery led WAC leader BYU (6-3, 5-1) over the Lobos (4-6, 2-5) at Albuquerque.

New Mexico has lost 12 in a row and 23 of 24 against BYU.

Sarkisian picked apart New Mexico’s defense for 303 yards--completing 18 of 27 passes--and threw for touchdowns of 20 yards to Mike Johnston and 21 yards to Itula Mili.

Fresno State 47, Texas El Paso 14--Jim Arellanes completed 22 of 31 passes for 412 yards and five touchdowns--four to Charlie Jones--to lead the Bulldgos (5-5, 2-4) to a WAC victory over UTEP (1-9, 0-6) at Fresno.

It was Arellanes’ first start since injuring a knee against UCLA in September.

Fresno State finished with 643 yards in total offense.

Colorado State 22, Hawaii 0--Freshman running back Jaime Blake ran for 170 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Rams (7-3, 5-2) over the Rainbows (4-5, 2-4) at Fort Collins, Colo.

It was Colorado State’s first shutout in 28 seasons and 145 games at Hughes Stadium.

Blake replaced senior fullback E.J. Watson, who was sidelined because of a sprained ankle.
