PREP FOOTBALL ROUNDUP : Kuhn Steps Up, Leads Calvary Chapel Past Brethren Christian, 21-7

Running back David Kuhn ran for a school-record 273 yards and a touchdown in 36 carries as Calvary Chapel secured a playoff berth with a 21-7 Olympic League victory over Brethren Christian Saturday night at Newport Harbor.

The victory clinched the league’s No. 3 spot for Calvary Chapel. Kuhn was instrumental, rushing for 216 yards in the second half. He set up two Calvary Chapel touchdowns before scoring the final one.

“We knew we had to beat this team to get into the playoffs, so I just tried to step it up,” said Kuhn, a 5-foot-11, 178-pound senior.

Calvary Chapel (6-3, 3-2) took a 7-0 lead with 4 minutes 52 seconds left in the third quarter on a one-yard scoring run by quarterback Dallas Kruse, capping a 92-yard march in 11 plays.

Brethren Christian tied the score, 7-7, when Scott Milne ran 32 yards for a touchdown at the end of the third. But Kuhn, who accounted for all but three of his team’s 276 yards of offense, led the Eagles on their game-winning drive, running for 54 yards in six carries and setting up a five-yard touchdown pass from Kruse to junior Jeremy Dutton with 7:47 remaining.

Kuhn’s 20-yard run late in the game completed the scoring.

Brethren Christian ends the season 4-6, 1-4 in league.
