Martin Brodeur had gone close to a month, 24 days exactly, without a victory. The strain was beginning to show.

The same goalie who led the NHL in victories (20) last season was 0-5-1 in his last six starts. Sooner or later, he figured things would change for the better.

On Sunday, it did.

Brodeur turned away 26 of 28 shots at Philadelphia as the New Jersey Devils defeated the Flyers, 3-2.

The Devils took control early in the contest, scoring a pair of goals 46 seconds apart in the first period to take a 2-0 lead. The Flyers rebounded with two goals in the second period.

Midway through the third, Scott Niedermayer unloaded a slap shot from the top of the slot that Randy McKay managed to deflect from midair for his second goal of the year at 7:03 to break the tie.

Buffalo 6, Tampa Bay 4--The Lightning squandered a two-goal lead in the third period at St. Petersburg, Fla.

Derek Plante, Brent Hughes, Dave Hannan and Matthew Barnaby had third-period goals as the Sabres (6-9-1) won for only the second time in seven road games. Plante, Hughes and Hannan scored in a 2:18 span to put the Sabres in front, and Barnaby added a late goal.

Montreal 4, Vancouver 2--Brian Savage scored twice at Vancouver as the Canadiens continued their surge.

Pierre Turgeon returned to the Montreal lineup with a short-handed goal and Mark Recchi added a goal to complete a weekend sweep for the Canadiens, who won, 4-0, Saturday in Calgary.

Edmonton 4, Chicago 4--Todd Marchant scored to tie the game with 7:03 left in Chicago.

Joe Murphy had put the Blackhawks ahead with 9:05 remaining in the third period, beating Joaquin Gage with a slap shot.

But Edmonton came back as Marchant took Kelly Buchberger’s pass and put a backhander past both Ed Belfour.
