Deciding the time was right, Athletic Director Joe Roberson named Lloyd Carr Michigan’s football coach Monday.
Carr, 50, became the interim coach last spring after Gary Moeller was forced to resign in the wake of a drunken incident at a suburban Detroit restaurant.

Sixth-ranked Florida State is scrambling to replace about $300,000 in football equipment that burned during the weekend. A truck carrying the team’s equipment from Chapel Hill, N.C., after Saturday’s game against North Carolina caught fire, destroying nearly all of its contents. . . . West Virginia wide receiver Rashaan Vanterpool has been suspended for Saturday’s game against Miami for missing classes.
