Sean Standley rushed for 151 yards and three touchdowns in 27 carries to lead Verdugo Hills High to a 20-6 victory over Hamilton on Friday in a City Section 3-A Division playoff game at Hamilton.
Verdugo Hills’ fifth consecutive victory was its first playoff win since 1980, when the Dons advanced to the semifinals.
Standley’s one-yard run on fourth down capped a 17-play, 88-yard drive with 5 minutes 4 seconds left, and Alex Trevino’s extra point gave Verdugo Hills (7-4) a 20-0 lead. Standley also scored on another one-yard run earlier in the fourth quarter and on a seven-yard run in the first quarter.
“The offensive line kicked [butt],” said Standley, who has 961 yards this season. “They did a great job.”
Trailing, 13-0, at halftime, Hamilton (4-7) drove to the Verdugo Hills one-yard line, but quarterback Jamar Alexander fumbled on a fourth-down sneak, and defensive lineman Andrew Reagan returned the ball to the Yankee 12.
