COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Pepperdine Handles Brazilians

Junior guard Gerald Brown scored a game-high 24 points and grabbed five rebounds and sophomore forward Bryan Hill added 20 points and 12 rebounds to pace Pepperdine in a 89-77 victory over Minas Tenis-Brazil in an exhibition victory at Malibu.

Junior guard Marques Johnson had 20 points for the Waves, who forced 22 turnovers and went on a 25-9 run in the second half to build a 78-60 lead with less than eight minutes to play.

In other men’s basketball games:

CS Northridge 83, United Arab Emirates 61--Damion Morbley had 18 points and nine rebounds for the host Matadors in an exhibition game.

Eric Gray added 13 points, including three-for-nine shooting from three-point range. Sophomore point guard Lucky Grundy had five assists.

The United Arab Emirates national team is 0-4 in a five-game U.S. tour.

Cypress 78, Moorpark 63--Wendell Nunnery scored 16 points and Brady Mertes added 14 points and eight rebounds, but the Raiders (0-3) fell in a first-round game at the Desert tournament.

Kevin Morris had 17 points to lead the Chargers (2-2).

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Point Loma 82, The Master’s 55--The Crusaders (1-3) had every player score as they routed the Mustangs (0-2) in a nonconference game at Point Loma.

Laura Fralich led Master’s with 16 points and Cheryl Hankins added 14 points and six rebounds.

Poor shooting from the field (33.3%) and the free-throw line (60.7%) hurt the Mustangs.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Pepperdine d. San Diego, 15-13, 15-10, 10-15, 17-15--Nicole Sanderson led Pepperdine in a West Coast Conference match at Malibu.

Sanderson led the Waves (20-1, 9-4 in conference play) with 24 kills and had one unassisted block and six block assists. Kim Ward contributed 17 kills and 13 digs.

Setter Becci Roehl tallied 71 assists and led Pepperdine with 14 digs.

Pepperdine won a tight first game, 15-13, and came back strong for a 15-10 victory in Game 2. San Diego pulled out the third game, 15-10, but dropped the match as Pepperdine prevailed, 17-15, in the fourth game.

San Diego (18-8, 10-3) was paced by LaManda Mounts with 24 kills and 15 digs.
