People : Spotlight on achievers : IRVINE : UCI Trio Elected to Science Federation

Three faculty members at UC Irvine were elected this month as fellows in the American Assn. for the Advancement of Science.

Psychobiology professor Ricardo Miledi, chemistry professor Kenneth Shea and physics professor Jaurang Yodh are new members of the association.

With more than 137,000 members worldwide, the group is the world’s largest federation of scientists. It also publishes the weekly journal Science.

Miledi has been recognized for research on neuromuscular communication and how neurotransmitters work.

Shea is the creator of a class of silicon gels that can be adapted for use as light filters.

Yodh heads a team of astrophysicists involved in the development of a New Mexico observatory that will be used to detect and study high-energy gamma rays associated with black holes.
