Notebook : Dana Hills’ Harrison Makes Move to Atlanta

Bryan Harrison of Dana Hills, the State and county champion in the 200 meters, has moved to Atlanta because his mother has been transferred by the company she works for, AT&T.;

“It was a very tough decision for us,” Debra Harrison said Monday. “We all liked it very much here, but it was an offer I couldn’t pass on.”

Harrison, The Times’ track and field athlete of the year, won the Orange County Championships in both the 100 and 200 meters and holds some of the county’s best marks under any conditions.

Harrison set all marks last year as a sophomore at Dana Hills. His mother said he looks forward to coming back to the Southland this spring to compete in the Arcadia and Mt. SAC invitationals.

The Southern Section Division I championship football game on Dec. 9 will not be played at Anaheim Stadium. Commissioner Dean Crowley said Monday the game probably will be played at the Coliseum.

The section looked elsewhere because of the expense associated with converting Anaheim Stadium from baseball to football, and the section’s inability to get out of a clause that stipulates the game would have to be played at an alternate site if it rains.

“We thought, because the Rams weren’t there, we could get out from under the rain clause,” assistant commissioner Bill Clark said. “But they booked the movie and they were not able to release the rain clause. We would be in there on Saturday, and they were going to film the movie on Monday so they needed the turf in the same condition. The cost [of replacing sod, getting an alternate site and converting the field] was prohibitive.”

To play the game without a rain clause, and replace sod at this time of year, could run as high as $40,000, stadium General Manager Greg Smith said.

Tri-Star Pictures is filming “The Fan” at the stadium; thus, it’s configured for baseball to accommodate the movie.

Although film production wouldn’t have prevented the championship game from being played there, as the film company’s signed contract stipulated it work around that game, the movie was directly responsible for it being unavailable for Friday’s Mater Dei-Los Alamitos game, a matchup that drew 30,065 last year.

“That caught us by surprise--them too, I think,” Smith said. “We didn’t make that window available.”

Tickets for Friday’s Mater Dei-Los Alamitos Southern Section Division I football game at Long Beach Veterans Stadium will be on sale today and Wednesday only at the participating schools.

Los Alamitos will put tickets on sale from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days in its activities office. At Mater Dei, they will be sold from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. today and Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to noon.

Tickets are $6 for adults and $3 for children under 12.

Some tickets are expected to be available at the stadium gate on the night of the game, but officials expect a quick sellout. Veterans Stadium seats 12,500.
