Pacifica High School will be in the Navy soon.

Beginning with the 1996-97 school year, Pacifica students may enroll in the U.S. Navy’s Junior Reserve Officer Training program at school.

The course in naval history, navigation and oceanography is designed to encourage an interest in school and the Navy. To foster leadership skills, the Navy also requires JROTC students to participate in community activities such as neighborhood cleanups and parades.

“It’s not just about joining the Navy,” said U.S. Navy Chief Kathryn Maynes, who heads the program. “The focus is on finishing high school.”

Principal Peggy Mahfood said the program also will be a boost for students who might be hoping to attend a military academy after graduation.

School officials project at least 100 students will enroll.

Santa Ana High School, Anaheim High School, Troy High School in Fullerton and Savanna High School in Anaheim also have naval JROTC programs.
