COLLEGE BASKETBALL 1995-96 : Hilbert Leads Way as Bruins Win Opener

Nickey Hilbert led a balanced UCLA attack with 14 points and five assists Friday as the Bruin women’s basketball team beat San Diego, 87-69, in the season-opener for both teams at Pauley Pavilion.

Four other Bruins scored in double figures--Kisa Hughes and reserve Allison Arredondo had 13 points each; Tawana Grimes had 12, and reserve forward Aisha Veasley had a career-high 10 points and a team-leading seven rebounds.

Michele Brovelli led San Diego with 17 points and eight rebounds. Kari Ambrose and Laura King scored 10 points each for the Toreros.

UCLA, which trailed by as many as seven points in the early going, outscored San Diego, 16-5, in the final 4:35 of the half to go ahead, 39-32. The Bruins were never threatened in the second half.

There were a total of 53 turnovers in the game--31 by San Diego. The Toreros lost despite outrebounding the Bruins, 45-38.
