NBA ROUNDUP : Payton Plays, SuperSonics Win

Hersey Hawkins scored 27 points and Shawn Kemp added 25 points and 17 rebounds Friday night as the Seattle SuperSonics remained unbeaten at home with a 112-100 victory over the San Antonio Spurs.

SuperSonic guard Gary Payton, who was thought to have broken his right ankle in Wednesday night’s victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves, started his 203rd consecutive game after a re-examination revealed it to be a sprain.

Spur center David Robinson was ejected for a punching foul with 3:17 left in the third quarter, and Coach Bob Hill was ejected for arguing.

Sean Elliott led the Spurs with 32 points. Robinson had 11 points and eight rebounds before his ejection.

Robinson’s trouble started after he tangled with Frank Brickowski under the basket with 3:17 left in the third quarter. After the punching foul was called, an argument lasting 10 minutes ensued. Hill got nose-to-nose with official Gary Zielinski, was whistled for a technical foul and was thrown out.

Denver 112, Dallas 109--Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf scored a season-high 39 points, including eight-of-11 on three-point shots, and rookie Antonio McDyess had two key overtime baskets as the Nuggets defeated the Mavericks at Dallas.

Bryant Stith added 25 points for the Nuggets, who won for only the third time in 11 games.

Chicago 90, Utah 85--Michael Jordan scored 13 of his 34 points in the final 2:23 at Salt Lake City.

Scottie Pippen added 22 points for the Bulls. John Stockton led Utah with 23 points and 12 assists. Karl Malone finished with 19 points.

Golden State 101, Boston 94--Rony Seikaly had 23 points and 10 rebounds as the Warriors won their first road game of the season.

Tim Hardaway added 18 points and nine assists, Chris Mullin scored 15 points for the Warriors, who lost their first five road games this season.

The Warriors were without guard Latrell Sprewell, who returned to the Bay Area on Tuesday with swelling in his left elbow.

Orlando 109, Minnesota 98--Nick Anderson scored a season-high 34 points, including 23 in the first half, as the Magic handed the Timberwolves their seventh loss in a row at Minneapolis.

Anderson, a career 47% shooter who entered the game shooting 36% this season, made 11 of his first 16 shots as the Magic ended a two-game losing streak in Minnesota.

Anfernee Hardaway had 22 points and 12 assists for the Magic.

Isaiah Rider led the Timberwolves with 29 points and Tom Gugliotta added 29 points and 14 rebounds.

Detroit 101, Philadelphia 78--Grant Hill had 20 points and 10 rebounds in 24 minutes as the Pistons routed the 76ers at Auburn Hills, Mich.

Allan Houston had 23 points for the Pistons, who stopped a three-game losing streak while extending Philadelphia’s losing streak to six games.

Charlotte 116, Vancouver 104-- Glen Rice scored 20 points at Charlotte, N.C., as the Hornets ended their five-game losing streak and extended Vancouver’s string to 10 losses.

Rice and Larry Johnson, who also had 20 points, sat out the fourth quarter.

Washington 110, Miami 94-- Robert Pack scored 13 of his 21 points in the third quarter, and Juwan Howard added 18 points as the Bullets beat the Heat at Baltimore.

Gheorghe Muresan had 19 points and 15 rebounds for the Bullets, who won consecutive games for the first time this season.

Alonzo Mourning had 24 points and eight rebounds and Billy Owens added 22 points for Miami, which had won three in a row.

“He wasn’t frustrating at all. He’s just big,” Mourning said of the 7-foot-7 Muresan. “I should have done a better job on him, but it’s kind of difficult to move him.”

Cleveland 100, Indiana 93--Chris Mills scored a season-high 22 points as the Cavaliers won at Indiana for the first time in six games. Reggie Miller scored 27 points, but missed eight of 11 three-point baskets.

Portland 99, New Jersey 87-- Clifford Robinson scored 23 points at Portland as the Trail Blazers avenged a 20-point road loss to the Nets earlier this season. Robinson, averaging 25.5 points, scored 17 in the first half.

NBA Notes

Rasheed Wallace, the Washington Bullets’ first-round draft pick out, injured his left ankle in the first half of the Bullets’ victory over Miami. He limped off the court and didn’t return. . . . The Boston Celtics activated Dee Brown from the injured list and signed 7-2 center Thomas Hamilton, who immediately went on the injured list because of strep throat.
