COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Cal Defeats UC Irvine in Water Polo

UC Irvine lost to third-seeded California, 9-6, in the semifinals of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation water polo tournament Saturday.

The Anteaters (16-7) led Cal, 5-4, after two quarters, but were outscored, 4-1, in the third quarter. Irvine faces USC, which lost to top-seeded UCLA, 9-7, in the third-place game today at Newport Harbor High School.

Long Beach State lost its consolation game to Stanford, 17-8. The 49ers (10-16) will play Pacific for seventh.

Cal and UCLA will meet in championship match at 2:30 p.m., with the winner gaining an automatic berth in the NCAA Final Four at Stanford.

In the Chapman men’s basketball tournament:

Chapman 101, Southwestern 47--Toby Curto led Chapman with 17 points. Todd Canavan had six assists in 16 minutes and Greg Vanden Ordel added 11 points for the Panthers (3-0).

In nonconference men’s basketball:

Grand Canyon 76, Concordia 68--Rick Haywood scored 17 points and Jeff Putnam scored 16 for Concordia (1-3) at Grand Canyon (5-0). Horacio Llamas scored 18 points and had 11 rebounds for Grand Canyon.

Texas El Paso 94, Southern California College 60--Eric Walker had 16 points and eight rebounds for SCC. Mark Ingles hit five three-pointers and scored 22 points for host Texas El Paso.

In nonconference women’s basketball:

Idaho State 80, CS Fullerton 42--Julia Allen scored 10 points to for Fullerton. Kelly Boles added 16 for Idaho State in the Iowa State tournament in Ames, Iowa.

Southern California College 72, Concordia (Ore.) 51--Heather Woodruff scored 20 points to lead SCC at Concordia.

UC Irvine 70, San Diego 60--Allah-mi Basheer scored 23 points to lead Irvine, which won its first season opener since 1985. Tamera Thomas and Leticia Oseguera each scored 19 points for the Anteaters. Nailah Thompson scored 17 points for host San Diego (0-2).

In the Long Beach Baden Blowout women’s volleyball tournament:

Long Beach State 3, Brigham Young 1--Brita Schwerm had 23 kills and seven digs for the 49ers (21-9), who won, 15-11, 11-15, 15-8, 15-2.
