A Brinks armored car guard was killed in a shootout during a robbery attempt Thursday afternoon outside a Long Beach bank, and police continued to search for the two suspects.

Fernando Hererra, 24, who was not wearing a bulletproof vest, was shot five times in the chest, Long Beach police said. He died at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center.

Two men, believed to be in their late 20s or early 30s, tried to rob Herrera as he was walking out of the lobby of the Queen City Bank with a bag of money, police said.

The robbers and Hererra exchanged shots and the two men ran away without the money, police said. It was not known whether any of the shots struck the men.

A section of Long Beach Boulevard was shut down as officers searched for suspects. Other officers used golf carts to search the grounds of the nearby Virginia Country Club. There had been no arrests by Thursday night.
