South Bay : Memorial Service at Pier to Honor K-9 Hero
Boris was a well-liked German shepherd who nabbed murder suspects, stopped graffiti artists red-handed and busted crooks.
The Redondo Beach police will host a memorial service at 4:30 p.m. today at the pier for the canine that was euthanized last week because of severe muscle deterioration in his hind legs and a diagnosis of cancer.
Boris worked for the Redondo Beach police for eight years and retired in 1993, said his handler, Officer Kenneth Greenleaf. Boris, who was almost 12, put in a 40-hour week.
“He was great. It was like he knew right from wrong,” Greenleaf said. “You never had to tell him what to do.”
Greenleaf said a eulogy will be given and a videotape of his retirement party played. Rose petals will be thrown into the ocean. . . .
