ALBUM REVIEW
GOLDIE; “Timeless”, FFRR (*** 1/2)
In the tradition of Herbie Hancock, Afrika Bambaataa and the Detroit techno pioneers, Goldie finds soul in the cold architecture of technology. You could call this work “jungle”--a relatively young sound that mixes super-fast hip-hop beats, techno and dancehall flavor. But that wouldn’t really do justice to the music’s breadth. It’s as much Philip Glass as rude-boy drum and bass.
“Timeless” is a visionary work that floats ethereal effects, jazzy instrumentals and lofty melodies over military-like drum tracks. Add to that the angelic vocals of Diane Charlemagne, and what you have is a 103-minute gem that is hauntingly futuristic: a chilling soundtrack to the “Blade Runner” world that may soon be upon us.
In the title song and “State of Tears,” Goldie explores the deepest, darkest corners of his machine and his mind.
New albums are rated on a scale of one star (poor), two stars (fair), three stars (good) and four stars (excellent).
