PARENTAL GUIDANCE

Share

I’m 67 years old and not inclined to write letters to Calendar, but I’m compelled to write in response to a letter last week full of the generation-gap (ofttimes generational hate) nonsense that is perpetuated as truth today.

Art Verity writes that all parents in the ‘60s regarded the Beatles as poster boys for the societal decay prompted by rock ‘n’ roll. I was the parent of two teen-agers then, and I and all the parents I associated with were busy fighting the social decay represented by racism, sexism and the Vietnam War. Our kids were with us, marching and demonstrating against that decay, which certainly preceded rock ‘n’ roll.

Obviously, Robert Hilburn and the parents I knew inhabited this planet, and we might ask Mr. Verity and others like him who spout this nonsense: What planet were you on? You need to listen to Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie and play John Lennon’s “Imagine” over and over again.
