CANDICE BERGEN

I was shocked to observe the ill-fated timing of your cover article on Candice Bergen last Sunday. I doubt that she appreciated a headline stating that “everything that can go right seems to have gone right for Candice Bergen” as she prepared to attend her husband Louis Malle’s funeral.

I realize that Calendar is printed ahead of time and that this story was probably in the works for weeks or months, but I would expect an organization the size and caliber of the Los Angeles Times to be both sensitive of the feelings of Ms. Bergen and her family as well as capable of making a last-minute switch to a different story.

Unfortunately, Bruce Newman’s article was printed and already on its way to distribution points before the death of film director Louis Malle was announced.

Candice Bergen has claimed the fruits of success in both her career and private life, yet her Emmys must pale in the grief. I wish her the best in raising her daughter and join her and others who will remember the equally gifted and delightful Louis Malle.
