Board to Vote on Landfill Negotiations

Share

The Board of Supervisors today will vote once again on whether to enter exclusive negotiations with the Sanitation Districts of Orange County over the possible sale of the county’s landfill system.

In a meeting last month, supervisors deadlocked 2 to 2 on the question. Supervisor Don Saltarelli was out of town.

Today, the full board will examine the issue.

The Sanitation Districts has long expressed interest in acquiring the landfills, which are considered one of the county’s most valuable assets. Earlier this year, the districts offered to buy the system for about $200 million.

Some supervisors support the exclusive negotiations, saying a sale would help the county with its bankruptcy recovery efforts.

But others said the county should accept proposals from both public and private firms before entering into talks.
