Fair to Offer Services to Homeless Veterans
Homeless veterans will have a chance to get a haircut, learn about housing options and settle up with the Department of Motor Vehicles for past-due traffic violations on Wednesday.
At the fifth annual Westside Homeless Fair, the Santa Monica Civic Center will be filled with providers of services for the homeless--the lion’s share provided by the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in West Los Angeles and others from community-based mental health facilities.
Officials say most homeless veterans go for years without being seen by health care providers or dealing with life’s bothersome details--unpaid parking tickets, for example. For that reason, dentists will be available to check teeth, optometrists will give eye exams and psychologists will offer advice and referrals. Doctors will conduct free HIV testing and immunizations.
Attorneys will be available for those who need legal representation for such things as speeding tickets.
Officials at the West Los Angeles Veterans Affairs Medical Center estimate that up to 50% of the homeless men in Los Angeles County are veterans.
