Jesse Pate, a question mark because of a sprained knee, made two successive three-point baskets during a 16-3 run that helped Arkansas hand 11th-ranked Missouri its first loss Tuesday night, 104-93, at Fayetteville, Ark.

Arkansas (4-2) set a school record with 18 blocked shots, six by Derek Hood. But Missouri (4-1) shot 47 free throws and made 38, including 21 of 28 in the first half. The Tigers played the final six seconds with four players because Coach Norm Stewart refused to substitute after Jason Sutherland, who led all scorers with 32, fouled out.

No. 2 Villanova 70, Miami 68--Villanova squandered a nine-point lead in the final minute and still won at Miami. Kerry Kittles made a layup with 1.8 seconds left and the Wildcats held off the Hurricanes.

The Wildcats, 6-0 overall and 2-0 in the Big East, are off to their best start since 1984-85, when they won the national title. Miami is 3-1, 1-1.

No. 4 Arizona 84, Montana 66--Joseph Blair scored 16 points and grabbed 13 rebounds and the Wildcats shook off some early trouble to win at Tucson.

Montana (5-1) took a 12-11 lead with 13 minutes to go in the first half, but Arizona (6-0) came back with 10 unanswered points, including two baskets by Blair.

The Grizzlies cut the lead to 27-21 on a three-point basket by Chris Spoja with 3:25 left in the half, but an 8-0 run gave the Wildcats a 35-21 edge at halftime. Blair’s layup at the buzzer increased the margin to 14 at the break.

No. 7 Memphis 89, Georgia State 69--Mingo Johnson and Lorenzen Wright scored 25 points each, and Wright grabbed 17 rebounds in the game at Memphis (4-0). Georgia State is 0-3.

No. 12 Iowa 78, Northern Iowa 73--The Hawkeyes got only four points from their leading scorer, their top outside shooter came up empty on five three-point attempts and they committed 22 turnovers.

But Jess Settles’ season-high 20 points and big advantages in rebounding and free-throw shooting enabled host Iowa (6-1) to beat the Panthers (2-1).

Vanderbilt 61, No. 15 Virginia 48--In winning their fifth game in a row, the Commodores (5-1) shot horribly from the field and the foul line, but made up for both failings by rebounding well.

Vanderbilt outrebounded Virginia 51-40, including a 22-14 edge on offensive rebounds. The Commodores got 15 of those in the second half in the game at Charlottesville, Va.

The Commodores won despite shooting 32.8% from the floor to 35.5% for Virginia (2-2).

No. 22 Michigan 69, LSU 68--It didn’t look like a good night for Louis Bullock. The Michigan freshman had made only four of 12 field-goal attempts and two of four free throws. Then, with 3.8 seconds left, Bullock latched onto the ball, drove the length of the court and made a 12-footer to give Michigan (6-2) the victory over host LSU (2-3) at Baton Rouge.
