SOCCER / NCAA SEMIFINALS : Record Crowd Watches Duke Top Virginia
Virginia’s drive to an unprecedented fifth consecutive NCAA men’s soccer championship was stopped Friday night when the Cavaliers lost, 3-2, in the semifinals to rival Duke, their first loss of the season.
The Blue Devils (16-6-1) ended the Cavaliers’ (21-1-2) NCAA playoff winning streak at 17 before 21,319 at Richmond Stadium, the largest crowd ever to watch a college soccer game in the United States.
Duke, which got goals from freshman midfielder Jay Heaps, Sam Smith and Craig Jeidy, will play Wisconsin (19-4-1) in Sunday’s final. The Badgers, in the Final Four for the first time, scored a 1-0 victory over Portland (16-3-3) on a goal by Lars Hansen.
