BASEBALL HAVEN: In just a few months, Lancaster will have its own minor-league baseball team. The JetHawks will play in a $14.3-million stadium fitted with luxury boxes ($8,000 per season for one that seats 21) and grass berms ($2.50 per game). . . . The California League team was previously known as the Riverside Pilots. Valley Briefing, B2
KRAMER: On the “Seinfeld” set, assistant director Randy Carter talks a lot about Glendale’s Alex Theatre. So series writers Tom Gammill and Max Pross decided to turn everyday life into comedy. “We thought it would be a good thing for Kramer to get into,” Gammill says. The episode, with Kramer spouting Carter’s film restoration rap, will air Thursday on CBS with a set designed to look like the Alex.
ORPHANS: The county and city of Los Angeles disagree about giving pets as Christmas gifts. The county, working with the animal-care group Mercy Crusade, is promoting $10 adoptions of shelter animals the next two Wednesdays. But the city is discouraging holiday adoption, saying it often doesn’t work. Instead, they’re promoting gift certificates. . . . To adopt now, call the Agoura shelter at (818) 991-0072.
OUT TO LUNCH: Valley ethnic restaurants scored well in Zagat’s 1996 guide. Woodland Hills’ Yang Chow was on the best Chinese food list, while Talesai in Studio City was a top Thai choice. Sushi Nozawa of Studio City was among the top five of all restaurants in the city. . . . The guide’s 4,800 contributors said 70% of their lunches and dinners are eaten at, or taken from, restaurants.
LEGAL EAGLES: Budding Marcia Clarks and Johnnie Cochrans from Harvard-Westlake in North Hollywood and Louisville High in Woodland Hills will go at it Tuesday during a moot court contest sponsored by the Constitutional Rights Foundation. The winner goes to the state finals. . . . Sierra Canyon School in Chatsworth will compete in the junior division.
