South Bay : 40 Firefighters Sent to Refinery Gas Leak

Share

About 40 firefighters were sent to the site of a natural gas leak Monday near the ARCO Refinery in Carson.

There were no injuries and no fires caused by the mid-morning leak in an industrial area at Alameda Street and Sepulveda Boulevard, said firefighter Larry Duran. The county Fire Department did not order evacuations in the industrial area, but two blocks of Sepulveda Boulevard were closed until 12:55 p.m., when the problem was controlled.

At 11:13 a.m., Los Angeles County firefighters received a call about the problem. They notified Southern California Gas Co. and, at 12:45 p.m., the gas was turned off.

The damage occurred when contractors installing a 20-inch natural gas line on Sepulveda Boulevard accidentally hit an existing line, according to Dennis Lord, the gas company’s district manager for the Carson area.
