Mable John, a blues singer-turned-evangelist, will host a free Christmas dinner for the homeless at Inner City Christian Center in on Friday.

John, the eldest sister of the late R & B singer and songwriter Little Willie John (whose hits included “Fever”), founded Joy in Jesus Ministries in 1986.

In her own musical career of 35 years, she said, “I’ve had a chance to entertain people and make them happy.”

Last year, about 500 people attended the Christmas celebration. John said the organization expects about 2,000 participants this year. “We have so many more people in need,” she said.

Donations of toys, fruit, refreshments and candy--as well as clothing, toiletries, blankets and food--will be distributed to needy families and individuals.

The meal will be served from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the center, 6075 S. Normandie Ave. John said volunteers are still needed for Friday. For more information, call (213) 731-9315.
