COTO DE CAZA : Board Acts to Bring New School Closer

Share

Plans for a new elementary school in the community were brought one step closer to reality this week under action by the Capistrano Unified School District Board of Trustees.

The board on Monday approved a financial arrangement with Coto de Caza Ltd., developers of the 4,000-acre community, as well as Kaufman & Broad Home Corp.

The agreement will allow the two companies to advance funds for the planned Wagon Wheel Elementary School, to be built on 12 acres off Oso Parkway.

The 700-student school would be built almost three years ahead of schedule under the agreement.

District officials would normally come up with advance funding from the state for the new school, which has an estimated $11-million price tag.

But because of cuts in state school construction funds, the two developers have agreed to pay their share in advance.

“We didn’t think we’d be able to bring this before [the board] before 1998 at the latest,” said Terri Lunine, deputy superintendent for administration. “It is only with help from these partners that this was made possible.”

The board also authorized the school district to begin seeking bids for construction of the new school, which could begin in March.

Officials expect the school to open by 1997.
