Obituaries : Mary Leonardo; Active in Portuguese Community

Mary Lemos Leonardo, a longtime Ventura resident and activist in Southern California’s Portuguese community, died Wednesday following a brief illness. She was 80.

Leonardo was born Dec. 8, 1915, on the Isle of Terceira, Azores Islands, Portugal. She moved to the United States in 1948 and settled in Ventura County following her marriage to John Leonardo.

Leonardo raised her children and was a homemaker in Saticoy until 1980, when her husband died. She moved to Artesia in 1980 to live with her brother and sister, and then returned to Saticoy in 1993 to be near her immediate family.

While in Artesia, Leonardo attended numerous Portuguese functions. She had been a member of a Portuguese social club since 1948.

Leonardo is survived by her son and daughter-in-law William F. and Corrinne M. Leonardo of Ventura; daughter Mary T. Leonardo of Saticoy; son and daughter-in-law John J. and Anna Leonardo of Oxnard; and six grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Ted Mayr Funeral Home.
