Police Chase, Arrest Assault Suspect

Share

A man suspected of assaulting his wife led police on a car chase Thursday in which he apparently shot himself in the leg with a gun he brandished at officers.

After an afternoon pursuit through three cities, police cornered Todd Mortiz, 24, in Santa Ana. Officers discovered he had a gunshot wound to his leg when they opened his car door, Anaheim Police Sgt. Mike Gray said. He apparently had shot himself in the calf, perhaps accidentally during a struggle with the passenger--a relative--over the handgun, Gray said.

Mortiz treated at Fountain Valley Regional Hospital and Medical Center and later jailed on suspicion of domestic assault and evading arrest.

Anaheim police began searching for Mortiz earlier this week after his wife reported that she had been assaulted by him, Sgt. Mike Gray said.
