Children Help Pick Mascots

Selina Seal, Dana Dolphin, Sally Swallow and Corky Coyote are the people’s choice.

Those are the recycling mascots chosen by adult and child residents of San Clemente, Dana Point, San Juan Capistrano and Laguna Niguel, respectively, as part of a new public awareness program.

Coordinated by Solag Disposal Co., the program aims to get residents, especially children, in the habit of recycling, said Daniel Batty, recycling manager for San Juan Capistrano-based Solag.

“By involving the kids,” he said, “it will in turn help educate their parents.”

The winning mascots’ costumes will be made into large puppets and taken to local elementary schools, where they will put on shows about recycling and hazardous waste. The puppets will also appear at community events, libraries and service clubs.

The program was created in response to the state-mandated Source Reduction and Recycling Act, Batty said.
