MIKE AND ME: Long Beach State forward Juaquin Hawkins was the big man on campus recently when the Chicago Bulls came to practice at the Pyramid before their recent game against the Clippers at The Pond of Anaheim. Superstar Michael Jordan strode up to Hawkins and said, “What’s goin’ on, J.H.?” . . . Hawkins guarded Jordan in pickup games during the summer while the Bulls’ star was in Los Angeles filming a movie. . . . “At first, I was shocked he remembered me,” Hawkins says. “I tried to stay cool because all my teammates and coaches were there, but I couldn’t. It made me feel real good.”

TITANIC HELP: It’s a good thing for the Cal State Fullerton men’s basketball team that the NCAA ruled John Williams eligible for this season after reviewing his transfer. Williams is averaging 18 points and 8.5 rebounds. No one else on the team is close to those totals. . . . Williams played two years at Mt. San Jacinto College, but spent a brief time at Utah State before leaving for personal reasons.

FREQUENT FLIER: Raimonds Miglinieks, an All-Big West Conference point guard for UC Irvine, is from Riga, Latvia. The Anteaters may be headed for their best season under Coach Rod Baker, who has gone to great lengths to build his team. Four starters are from out of state, one is from out of the country. . . . Last season’s conference freshman of the year, Kevin Simmons, is from Brooklyn, N.Y.; sophomore captain Brian Keefe is from Winchester, Mass., and starting center Dan Augilis is from Leawood, Kan.

The Vanguards have a game tonight at Christian Heritage in El Cajon and another Tuesday at home against Elmhurst (Ill.)
