NHL ROUNDUP : No Place Like Home for Rangers
Mark Messier had two goals and an assist, and Mike Richter got his 13th career shutout as the Rangers extended their home unbeaten streak to 15 games with a 3-0 victory over the Washington Capitals Monday night at New York.
Messier scored a power-play goal early in the first period, and added his second goal late in the third to extend the Rangers’ run at Madison Square Garden to 13-0-2 since Oct. 22.
Messier’s assist on Pat Verbeek’s goal early in the third period was the 901st of his 17-year career, tying him with Bryan Trottier for seventh on the NHL career list.
Montreal 3, Hartford 2--Mark Recchi scored two goals as the Canadiens beat the struggling Whalers at Montreal.
Marc Bureau also scored for Montreal, which has won three of its last four games.
Brendan Shanahan scored both goals for the Whalers, who have won only two of their last 11.
Vancouver 4, Colorado 2--Martin Gelinas’ second goal of the game broke a tie with 2:08 to play and the Canucks went on to win at Denver.
Colorado, which lost its third in a row, had a power-play opportunity with 1:38 left and chose to pull goalie Patrick Roy from the net for a six-on-four advantage.
But the Canucks got the puck and Russ Courtnall fed Trevor Linden, who beat defenseman Sandis Ozolinsh to put the game away.
Edmonton 3, Ottawa 1--Jiri Slegr’s 60-foot shot broke a tie with 2:54 to play and the Oilers went on to win at Edmonton.
Jason Arnott added an empty-net goal for the Oilers, who are 4-1-1 in their last six games.
Randy Cunneyworth scored for Ottawa, which has lost six in a row and is 1-19-1 in its last 21 games.
NHL Notes
Right wing Ron Stern of the Calgary Flames has been suspended by the NHL, pending a hearing today, as the result of a slashing incident against St. Louis defenseman Jeff Norton on Thursday.
