A cat rescued from a boiler at Fullerton College has been adopted by the school and given a job and a title: boiler room rodent manager.

Ken MacGill, the college’s heating and air conditioning supervisor, heard a faint “meow” while checking the 300-horsepower boiler. He dismantled a 10-foot metal plate covering one end of the unit and lifted out an “emaciated cat, skinny as a rail,” said administrative secretary Carol Brown, who witnessed the rescue.

MacGill and Brown fed the starving animal, whom they named Lucky Lady. When college officials heard the story, they proclaimed that the campus would be the cat’s permanent home and that she could roam among boilers, shop tables and tool racks in the maintenance department.

The new rodent manager’s job description, officials said, specifies “minimal responsibilities and maximum perks.”
