Terry Shea, offensive coordinator and associate head coach under Bill Walsh at Stanford from 1992-94, was given a five-year contract by Rutgers and told to resurrect a program that has had only four winning seasons in the last 15 years. The deal includes a $150,000 base salary and incentives.

Shea, 49, replaces Doug Graber, who was fired Nov. 28 after posting a 29-36-1 record in six seasons, including a 4-7 mark this season.

Iowa senior linebacker Marcus “Tex” Montgomery was suspended from the team after being charged with assaulting an ex-girlfriend. The Hawkeyes leave today for El Paso, where they play Washington in the Sun Bowl on Dec. 29.
