SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

A Long Beach man who left his injured nephew at the scene of a head-on collision near Moorpark on Christmas Eve was arrested Monday and charged with vehicular manslaughter, officials at the California Highway Patrol reported Tuesday.

Authorities said Raul Ortega fled the scene of the accident on Tierra Rejada Road just east of California 23, leaving his 18-year-old nephew, Miguel Nunez-Ortega of Simi Valley, trapped in the car. Nunez-Ortega later died of massive head wounds Christmas Day.

Ortega, 31, was being held Tuesday at the Ventura County Jail on more than $1-million bail. Besides the manslaughter charge, he also faces a single count of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol; in addition, he is an illegal immigrant, authorities said.

Ortega and his nephew were driving west on Tierra Rejada Road when Ortega’s car crossed the double-yellow line and hit a van head-on, authorities said.

The driver of the van, Jay Goodman, 45, of Moorpark, sustained minor injuries. He was treated at Simi Valley Hospital and released Monday, hospital officials said.

Ortega ran from the scene, leaving Nunez-Ortega inside the car, officials said. Ortega soon collapsed and was later detained, authorities said. The CHP determined that Ortega had been driving under the influence of alcohol.

The Ventura County Fire Department extracted Nunez-Ortega from the car and brought him to Los Robles Regional Medical Center. He underwent surgery Sunday night but died Monday from head injuries sustained from the accident.

Ortega was treated for moderate injuries at Simi Valley Hospital and was taken into custody.

Nunez-Ortega is survived by his parents, Miguel and Maria Nunez from Guajanouto, Mexico; an aunt, Maria Ortega, and seven siblings. A 7 p.m. rosary service is scheduled tonight at Garcia Mortuary in Oxnard. The victim’s body will be flown to Mexico for the funeral and burial.
