Ride for the Roses

Share

What’s a parade without prancing horses? Traditionally, many equestrian groups ride the Colorado (Boulevard) trail on New Year’s Day during the Rose Parade, but few spectators get to see the groups do what they do best: Perform. On Saturday, many of the equestrian groups will strut their stuff at the fourth annual Tournament Equestrian Festival at Santa Anita Park, from 10:15 a.m. to noon.

The showcase for Rose Parade riders includes such groups as the elegant Andalusian horses from Spain, the Woodside Vaulters (gymnastics on horseback), the Medieval Times knights from Buena Park (giving jousting demonstrations), the Foxfield Drill Team (riding without bridles or saddles), the Country Spice drill team from Banning (western riding routines) and the Buffalo Soldiers (demonstrating cavalry charges). Performances will take place on the main track in front of the grandstand.

The 1996 Rose Queen and her court will also be on hand to select a raffle ticket that will send the winner to the Rose Bowl football game on Monday.
