Speed Limit Hikes

It is astonishing to read that UCI professor of economics Charles Lave applauds the increase in speed limits in California (“CHP to Be Strict With Speeders,” Dec. 13). He says we can “stop concentrating on speeding and concentrate on things that matter.”

Transportation Secretary Federico Pena implored the states’ governors, for safety purposes, to consider not raising the speed limits.

The Center for Research and Policy at Johns Hopkins School of Public Health says, “speed kills and more speed kills more.”

Physicists tell us the higher the speed, the more distance is needed to brake to a stop.

Auto insurance companies predict more and worse collisions on rural roads and urban highways.

In states like California, saving lives is something that matters!
