COLLEGE FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : SUGAR BOWL : Virginia Tech Nickname Is Old Story
What is a Hokie?
Actually, it’s a figment of the imagination of Virginia Tech student O.M. Stull in 1896, when he won a prize for a Hokie yell that is still used.
Tech also calls itself the Fighting Gobblers and uses a cheer that involves flapping hands and making a turkey call when it scores.

Texas suspended walk-on running back Ricky Hinnant and freshman quarterback Marty Cherry for breaking unspecified team rules. Neither was expected to play tonight.
*
The kickoff for tonight’s Sugar Bowl has been moved up from 4:30 (PST) to 4:10. . . . A member of the bowl alliance, along with the Fiesta and Orange bowls, the Sugar Bowl will have the national championship game next season.
