Tustin Seeks to Oversee Base Redevelopment

The city is seeking to administer the redevelopment of 80 acres of the Tustin Marine Corps Helicopter Air Station that falls outside its borders.

The southeastern portion of the 1,600-acre base is in Irvine, which does not have a redevelopment agency.

Under state law, Tustin’s Community Redevelopment Agency can oversee the project if both cities agree, said Christine Shingleton, Tustin’s assistant city manager.

The Tustin City Council on Tuesday approved the plan, which will come before the Irvine City Council on Jan. 12.

Under the agreement, Irvine would keep control over final zoning and project approval and would continue to police the mostly residential area, bordered by Peters Canyon Wash and Harvard Avenue. Irvine also would receive any taxes generated from the land, officials said.

A preliminary redevelopment plan for the 80-acre site calls for mostly residential use, including a 20-acre school and 8-acre park. The marine base is expected to close by 1997.
