A bandit robbed a Port Hueneme branch of Great Western Bank on Saturday in the first such heist of the new year in Ventura County.

There were about 50 Ventura County bank robberies last year, said Gary Auer, supervising agent for the Ventura County FBI office.

The robber, described as a Latino male in his 30s, entered the bank in the 600 block of Channel Islands Boulevard about 2:40 p.m. After presenting the teller with a note demanding money, he left the bank with an undetermined amount of cash. The robber also spoke to the teller, saying that he did not plan to shoot anyone.

No one was injured and no weapon was seen during the heist, officials said.

Port Hueneme police searched the area for more than an hour, but were unable to find the suspect.

The man is described as 5 feet, 6 inches to 5 feet, 9 inches tall; heavy set; with a mustache and a long, black ponytail. He was wearing dark pants and shoes, a hunting cap with the ear flaps up, a white dress shirt and a reddish tie, police said.
