BP to Trim Number of Refineries: British Petroleum said it will close or sell three refineries, resulting in a $1.1-billion charge in a move that highlights the three-year overcapacity crisis in the oil refining industry. BP announced plans to sell refineries at Lima, Ohio, and at Lavera in southern France and to close a section of the Nerefco refinery near Rotterdam in the Netherlands. The three refineries collectively employ about 1,950 people. The measures, which had been expected, will trim the oil giant’s capacity by about a third and follow earlier worldwide industry restructurings to raise prices for refined products. Including the sale of Marcus Hook, BP said the new moves will bring its existing refining capacity to 1.4 million barrels a day, down from 2 million.
