Oilers Trade Goalie Ranford

Edmonton Oilers goaltender Bill Ranford, one of the last vestiges of the team’s Stanley Cup era of the 1980s, was traded Thursday to the Boston Bruins for right wing Mariusz Czerkawski and junior league defenseman Sean Brown.

Edmonton unloaded Ranford after recently signing Curtis Joseph to a three-year contract. The Oilers obtained Joseph last summer from St. Louis. Joseph played most of this season in the IHL.

Oilers general manager Glen Sather has shown time again his willingness to trade stars and in recent weeks had privately made no secret over his unhappiness with the recent play of Ranford, who had carried a weak Oilers team the past three seasons.

Ranford, 29, led the Oilers to their last Stanley Cup in 1989-90 when he had an outstanding playoff run.
