Unocal Agrees to Fines: The Los Angeles-based oil company will pay Arizona $250,000 for failing to clean up a Phoenix service station, according to an Arizona official. Unocal Corp. has also agreed to pay another $280,000 to hire an environmental watchdog to oversee the cleanup of more than 60 other Unocal properties, Atty. Gen. Grant Woods said. Unocal will also be required to spend millions of dollars cleaning up 20 of the properties where leaking fuel tanks have contaminated ground water, he said. The company did not respond to requests for comment. The agreement settles a lawsuit filed by the state after Unocal failed for more than two years to clean up a lot where one of its stations was located.
