Obituaries : Zulia V. Schneider; Actress, Park Commissioner

Zulia V. Schneider, a former actress and Port Hueneme park and recreation commissioner, died Wednesday at the age of 80.

Mrs. Schneider was born Jan. 31, 1915, in Fort Smith, Ark., to William J. and Nina Griggs.

After moving to Southern California, she found acting jobs in films and plays. She also worked as an Earl Carrol showgirl in singing and dancing revues.

Her daughter, Zulia Scotton of Van Nuys, recalls watching her mother perform. “You know it’s your mother, but it still surprises you,” she said, adding that her mother was a wonderful actress. “She was very special, very creative and artistic.”

With her late husband, A. Kenneth Schneider, Zulia Schneider moved to Ventura County about 39 years ago, Scotton said. The actress became involved in local politics, serving as a park and recreation commissioner in Port Hueneme.

She was also a member of the Ventura County Democratic Central Committee and president of the Port Hueneme Democratic Club. She was living in Oxnard at the time of her death.

Other survivors include daughters Tabetha Pittman of North Hollywood and Chrystal Settle of Fort Smith, and one granddaughter.

She will be buried Tuesday in Fort Smith. Funeral arrangements are being handled by James A. Reardon Mortuary of Oxnard.
