COP CLASSES: Officials at the county Sheriff’s Academy thought they were ready to offer their classes to Ventura College students (B1). They even had their course list in the college’s spring catalog. . . . But the proposal has run into snags, mostly over whether instructors would work for the sheriff or the community college district. “Unfortunately, the Board of Trustees was not in favor of the contract we came up with,” said Lt. Chris Godfrey, who heads the academy.

BETTER LUCK THIS TIME: Today marks the 10th observance of Martin Luther King’s birthday in Oxnard, with the same program as in years past: prayer at 8 a.m. at Plaza Park, followed by a march to the Oxnard Performing Arts Center. A 9 a.m. program there will feature speakers, music and Scripture readings. . . . The schedule was the same two years ago, but there was a hitch: a 4:31 wake-up call from Northridge. Iva Jeffreys said the MLK committee had lunch for 500 ready to go, but the food was not wasted after the observance was canceled: “We gave it to the Red Cross.”
