An 86-year-old man was killed when he tried to flag down a fast-moving Metrolink train with a flashlight after his car had stalled on railroad tracks in Riverside on Monday, officials said.

It was the first fatality involving the inland Metrolink line, which started service in October, said Peter Hidalgo, a Metrolink spokesman.

“He must have become confused after his car stalled, found a flashlight, got out of his car and tried to flag down the train, but it takes half a mile to stop and he was killed instantly,” Hidalgo said. The train also struck the man’s car.

The victim’s identity was not revealed pending notification of relatives. The four-car train was carrying 102 passengers, none of whom were injured, Hidalgo said.

The train was traveling at 50 mph. The speed limit is 60 mph in the area of the accident, at Magnolia Avenue and McKinley Street.
